New interface for visual CMS
Innovate and iterate
Change is the only constant. I think i have used these five words more than any other phrase when starting a blog post. Simply because i believe this is the essence of how the entire SiteManager team operates and thinks.
Yes... the visual CMS interface is/was a great improvement towards traditional CMS platforms like WordPress, Drupal & Joomla. However, when faced with user feedback we got some great suggestions on how we could make it better. We also had some neat ideas of our own thrown in the mix and voila: the new visual CMS was born.
Like a small social media company has written on their walls: move fast and break things.
Improved drag and drop
One of the main problems with the previous interface was the drag and drop experience. You had to drag your components from the top of the page. Now you can drag your components from the left. The website render will show drop zones. When you move your dragged component to the bottom or top of the page, it will start auto scrolling.
Oh... and we also implemented a neat search function for those projects that use a lot of page components.
Side Panel Editing
The fullscreen popup editor has been replaced with a side panel. The panel automatically opens and closes when adding and editing your content.
All CMS actions will be performed using the side panel inside the new interface.
The visual CMS creates a consistent, intuitive and easy to learn experience for you and your end-clients.
In the SiteManager platform content and design have separate interfaces.
We did however add a special button for designers when they enter the new visual CMS. In the top right corner of the website render they will notice a green design button. This button is a shortcut that leads to the design editor of the current page in the CMS. In one click the designer will be able to make design changes to the layout and content of this page.
Note that CMS user without design access will never see this button and will not be able to use this functionality.
For developers we also added an additional button in the new visual CMS.
When they hover the page components, they will see a dark code button. In one click developers will enter the code editor for this component. We also added a link to the form builder for this component to improve the workflow even more.
Note that CMS & design users without developer access will never see this button and will not be able to use this functionality.
